Malhwan An, She tree, star, wind, and desire for serenity
2010.10  Goowon Kang (an artist and the chief editor of Vergil America)

Malhwan An is casting her unconstrained eyes on the trees. At her grandmother's country home in his youth had she seen them called the Mirunamu, which is an eastern cottenwood. The Mirunamu doesn't seem to be the usage or the purpose for him. So it sometimes becomes zelkova, gingko, or baobab trees. The story recalls the longevity and sanctity of baobab trees to my mind. So one of her painting series "Trees - Conversation' reminds me of the idea that trees are a space of lives in themselves, of the figure of the pregnant woman, or of the waist and hip of woman. The trees given a birth of life have the meaning of Mother Nature, the Tree of Life, and eternity. The Mirunamu, which is grown up in the country field at the grandmother's home of the young girl who keeps the guaranteed spirituality, remains in the space of the dream in which it wishes to grow up and to remember with people's stories.

"Seen in his childhood, the Mirunamu with a magpie's nest looked like it was touching the stars and the moon. The bare nest in winter remained so in my heart with the wind that it is drawn into another piece of myself." wrote Malhwan An in her notes. It seems to be painted in the mind of the little prince of Saint-Exupéry or Jeje in "My Sweet Orange Tree" of Vasconcelos. Trees keep stars and wind in their bosoms. Being kept in the tree standing solemnly in a far vast wilderness for long time, the wind calls birds. These birds are the emblem of drawing signifying simultaneously hope and freedom.

In the words of people saying, a contemplating moment with watching stars in the night-sky makes your spirit mature and gives the wisdom to be able to catch things out of reality. Malhwan An's trees and birds, earth and sky, and rivers and fields make you deeply philosophize on your own existence. It is so the shape and tone's stillness and the changing movement in it, as to the thing dragging stories out of the invisible place. In the quietude do the solemnity and pain of a vertical and a curve remain as well as the passion and plaint. Solemn is the resplendence of a big tree soaring into the sky with joy overflowing. All of these feel like being our lives. Trees, stars and wind now are understood as nature, as it were, with my wishing for happiness on putting stars and wind into my heart.

It is very surprising to see the tree. The tree shines as the crystal by absorbing everything from the earth and condensing them firmly. The tree is the tree itself! When we listen to the bark of a tree that is layered for a long time, secretive sound of deep earth resonates. There are more, the sound of innumerable lives murmuring stuck in the dark stratum, of water flowing, of the soils energy can be sensed. The trees that should put down roots and live in this earth before human beings prove their solitary life lived with them.

There is everything in the trees body. I see that he trims and adjusts the tree and moves each of it to the picture by remembering the trees nature that is now considered as one of the virtues the humans need. We can say that the artist makes conversation with that tree. The message entangled between the wind and the Sun by pulling them in the canvas and shaping the trees body; and the memory of the artist with the tree for his lifetime are reflected for a long time like the bull eats fodder.

An¡¯s trees, shrouded in black-light, appear hypnotic as a dream. Immersed in one subject, the artist can reach enlightenment. Floating fragments of An¡¯s memory exude from the scraped trees, and the joy of life radiates, where An can dream a comfortable dream or find eternal rest in the forest of night, when time pauses.
