화가 전영근의 그림을 보았을 때 첫 인상은 ‘따뜻하고도 편안하다’였다. 여행을 떠나고 싶다는 느낌을 받으며, 작품 속 자동차는 홀로 어디로 향하고 있을지 상상하게 된다. 가장 영향을 많이 받았다는 화가인 반 고흐의 그림처럼, 그의 시원시원한 붓터치에는 열정, 추억, 그리고 삶의 에너지가 담겨 있다.

전영근 작가의 작품에는 청년 시절 넉넉지 않은 삶에서 필연적으로 경험하게 된 노마드 라이프, 방랑자의 삶이 녹아 있다. 자동차 한 대에 필요한 살림만 챙겨 다니며, 가구도 사치라 여겨 라면 박스를 옷장, 탁자, 책상으로 사용하던 시절이 있었다. 그렇게 방 한구석에 박스들이 하나씩 쌓여갔다. 작가 생활 초기에는 정물화를 많이 그렸다는 그의 작품 세계는 현재 대부분 풍경을 담고 있지만 정물화의 연장선에 있다고 할 수 있다. 삶을 구성하는 '정물'들이 그 사람의 삶 자체를 담고 있기 때문이다.

그림에 대한 열정과 지적 욕구가 폭발하던 시절, 전영근 작가는 일주일에 세 번 강의를 나가며 경제활동을 하며 생활을 유지했다. 하루에 3-4시간씩 운전하면서 길에서 버리는 시간이 아깝다고 느꼈던 그는 운전 중에도 끊임없이 작업을 구상했다. 이렇게 눈으로 수집한 풍경과 감정의 조합으로 현재의 스타일을 완성했다. 물건들이 쌓여있는 자동차가 풍경 사이를 뚫고 지나가는 구성은 마치 인생의 한 장면을 정물화처럼 표현한 것으로 보인다. 그의 작품에는 사람의 얼굴 표정과 같은 직접적인 감정 요소들은 배제되고, 풍경을 이루는 정물적인 요소들만 강조된다.

전영근 작가의 작품 구성 요소에는 얼핏 보기에 한국적인 특징들이 많지 않지만, 신기하게도 한국화적인 서양화의 느낌을 풍긴다. 이는 작품 속에 등장하는 자동차 위 물건들과 같은 요소들의 영향도 있겠지만, 그의 의도적인 동양화의 산점투시 기법을 이용하여 극대화 시킨 결과다. 마치 동양화를 보는 것처럼, 하늘에서 본 시점인데도 우리는 자동차의 뒷모습을 동시에 보게 되지만, 그 조화가 전혀 어색하지 않다. 얼핏 보면 작품 속 자동차가 그림의 서사에서 주인공인 듯 보이지만, 실제로는 신의 관점을 갖는 관찰자의 시점에서 작품을 감상하게 된다.

전영근 작가의 작품은 그의 삶과 경험을 녹여낸 정물화의 연장선상에 있다. 기분 좋은 색감의 자동차와 풍경, 미묘하고도 잔잔하게 표현되는 한국적인 정서, 그리고 그 안에 담긴 인생의 서사와 흔적들은 우리에게 따뜻하고도 편안한 감정을 불러일으킨다.

Very first impression of Jun Young Geun’s paintings is ‘warmth and comfort.’ His works evoke a desire to travel, leaving one to imagine where the solitary car in his paintings might be heading. Much like the paintings of Van Gogh, who greatly influenced him, his bold brushstrokes carry the energy of passion, memories, and life itself.

Jun Young Geun’s works reflect the nomadic lifestyle that inevitably arose from his youth. There was a time when he lived with only the essentials packed into a car, using ramen boxes as wardrobes, tables, and desks. These boxes gradually piled up in the corner of his room. Although his current works predominantly feature landscapes, they are an extension of the still life paintings he created early in his career. The 'still life' objects that make up one's life embody the essence of that person's existence.

During the period when his passion for painting and intellectual pursuits exploded, Jun Young Geun maintained his livelihood by giving lectures three times a week. Spending 3-4 hours a day driving, he found the time wasted on the road regrettable, so he constantly conceptualized and painted his work in his imagination while driving. The combination of landscapes and emotions he collected through his eyes shaped his current style. The composition of a car filled with objects cutting through the landscape seems to represent a still life depiction of a moment in life. His works exclude direct emotional elements like facial expressions, focusing instead on the still life components that make up the scenery.

Although the elements in Jun Young Geun’s paintings may not overtly exhibit Korean characteristics, they intriguingly exude a sense of Korean-style Western painting. This is largely due to his intentional use of the multi-perspective technique found in traditional East Asian painting. Like viewing an oriental painting, where one simultaneously sees the car's rear from a bird’s-eye view, this harmony does not feel out of place. At first glance, the car may appear to be the protagonist of the narrative within the painting, but it seems to be observed from a divine perspective, inviting the viewer to experience the work from an omniscient point of view.

Jun Young Geun’s works are an extension of the still life that incorporates his life and experiences. 나는 여행길 풍경을 통해 현대인의 삶을 인간적이면서도 따뜻하게 그리고 싶다.
일탈을 꿈꾸면서도 현실에서 벗어나지 못하고 욕망과 목표에 쫓기며 숨 가쁘게 살아가는 현대인들이 잠시 여유와 행복 그리고 희망을 느끼며 자신을 돌아볼 수 있도록 하고 싶다
불필요하고 거추장스러운 것들을 던져버리고 꼭 필요한 것만 챙겨 길을 떠나는 사람들의 모습을 통해 인생에서 가장 중요한 것이 무엇인지 생각해 보기를 바라며....


나는 삶이 반영되는 따뜻하고 소박한 그림을 그리고 싶다
따라서, 요란하지도 않고 특별할 것도 없는 나의 주변에 말없이 존재하는 사물들을 그린다.
일상에서 보이는 사물들은 살아 숨 쉬며 시간에 체취를 지니고 있고, 그와 더불어 살아가는 사람들의 정서와 감정을 느끼게 해준다. 그리고 그것들은 인간보다 더 인간적인 삶의 이야기를 조용하고 가식 없이 전해준다.
